Rien ne va plus/ Faites vos Jeux

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

The “Rien ne va plus/ Faites vos Jeux” exhibition is organized by Powerhouse Company / NAiM / Bureau Europa / A10. Produced in Holland, the exhibition has an international theme and focuses on the combined impact of economic crisis, environmental crisis and the crisis between the generations on architecture and on ways to understand the complexity of the current crisis.

The impact of the financial crisis on architecture was unpredictable and unequalled. The question what is wrong in our financial system could be followed by another one, what is wrong in our architecture. This last boom was caused by the loan and speculations in the real estate. The architecture represented a means of getting rich rather than stand for welfare, with the result that buildings were built to be resold, rather than to be lived in.

From the origins of social modernism to postmodernism, fashion and iconic architecture – what’s left of moral authority given by the Modern Movement to architecture? And if architecture is not engaged socially anymore, how to ensure sustainable solutions as needed? How can we generate an architecture based on long-term quality instead of short-term profits.

Rien ne va Plus/ Faites vos Jeux started as a research project based on the statement that we are nowadays witnesses of a triple crisis. The first, an economic crisis caused by speculation in real estate, the second, an environmental crisis deriving in unrecorded climate changes and the third, a crisis of generations.

This research never aimed at offering a conclusion about the way to foster good practice or how things could be better from now on. At least not immediately. The “Rien ne va plus/ Faites vos Jeux“ exhibition is open to communications and wants to initiate a dialogue for the possible solution to those crises.
